Maxim's new DS3501 digital potentiometer built-in temperature sensor
Dallas Semiconductor, a wholly owned subsidiary of Maxim Integrated Products, introduced the DS3501 7-bit nonvolatile digital potentiometer (digipot) with an output voltage of up to 15.5V. The device is the first family of highly integrated nonvolatile digital potentiometers with built-in temperature sensors, ADCs, and look-up tables (LUTs), with similar cost to standard digital potentiometers.
The DS3501 provides an ADC-addressable 36-byte LUT that can be found over a temperature range of -40°C to +100°C. The LUT output plus the value of the non-volatile initial value register (IVR) or the LUT output can be used directly as an input to the 7-bit linear potentiometer. The architecture supports a wide range of applications, such as LCD backplanes, optical receivers, and industrial control applications where the ideal control voltage varies with temperature. The DS3501 is specifically designed for two different applications where the voltage varies linearly with temperature or nonlinearly.
The device is programmed via an I2C-compatible interface with communication rates up to 400kHz. The DS3501 is available in a space-saving, 10-pin μSOP package. The device starts at $0.70 (100k tablet, FOB USA).
