A research team from South Korea's Buching University recently discovered that a cobalt sulfide electrode prepared with ethanol as a solvent exhibits super-capacitive properties and can be used as a supercapacitor. The research team used water, ethanol, and a mixture of the two as the solvent to make different cobalt sulfide electrodes. Using techniques such as X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy, they analyzed the crystal characteristics, chemical state, and surface morphology of cobalt sulfide nanoparticles in different solvents, and used cyclic voltammetry and constant current. The electrochemical characteristics of the cobalt sulfide electrode were evaluated by charge-discharge method and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The results show that the cobalt sulfide electrode with ethanol as the solvent exhibits the best capacitance characteristics. The researchers analyzed that the cobalt sulfide electrode prepared with ethanol as the solvent, because the ethanol solvent has a more appropriate surface morphology, the ions in the electrolyte are more likely to diffuse into the electrode interior, the conductivity increases, and thus show the characteristics of the super capacitor. New research has proved that cobalt sulfide nanoparticles will have broad application prospects in the fields of photocatalysis, electrocatalysis, water and solar cell decomposition, and various energy storage devices, and is a superior anode material for making supercapacitors.
