Google is working with a chip design company in Silicon Valley to develop a technology that allows smartphones to use their processing power to identify objects in photos and videos without relying on the help of remote data centers. Google and chip startup Movidius announced the cooperation on Wednesday, and they hope to introduce this technology, called deep learning, into smartphones.
Google has already demonstrated image recognition in Google photos. This mobile application can not only store pictures uploaded by people through smartphones, but also analyze them. The user can also search by entering the name of the object, or use a person's face photo to find other photos containing that person. However, uploading pictures takes time, and the wireless connection that you rely on when searching on your smartphone is not always available.
If built-in recognition technology is available, the smartphone can recognize objects in various applications at any time, including identifying faces to authorize transactions, or helping blind people identify signage.
Movidius focuses on computer vision development. The company has previously worked with Google on the Project Tango project, which can create 3D maps based on interior space. According to the latest agreement, Google will purchase an unknown number of MA2450 chips and supporting software from Movidius. The financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed and Google did not disclose when the technology will be available.
Blaise Aguera y Arcas, head of Google’s machine intelligence division at Seattle, said: “In cooperation with Movidius, we can extend this technology beyond the data center and apply it to practice. Let people enjoy the benefits of machine intelligence on their personal devices."
Movidius CEO Remi El-Ouazzane believes that Google should integrate this technology into future mobile devices. He said: "This cooperation will give birth to a new generation of equipment. It will be launched in the near future."
