Ford's Engine Regeneration Process Using Plasma Coating Technology

On December 2, 2015, Ford Motor announced that it has used the company's patented plasma coating technology to develop a process to regenerate used engines. This process was originally developed to enhance the performance of the "Mustang Shelby GT 350R" engine, and this time it was applied to the recycling of used engines. According to Ford, using this process can reduce CO2 emissions by half when compared to the new engine.

Although the engine currently produced has a design life of several hundred thousand kilometers, it can only replace the new engine after a failure. The former engine regeneration technology used cast iron parts and complicated machining processes, which not only consumed large amounts of energy, but also cost very much.

Ford's plasma coating technology "Plasma Transferred Wire Arc" can be used to thermally spray the inside of the engine block to restore it to its factory condition. There is no need to add heavy parts, and the regenerated cylinder block can be used as a basic part of a replacement engine.

In addition, Ford has taken some other measures to reduce the environmental load. The company adopted a high-strength aluminum alloy material in the pickup "F-150" that can effectively reduce the weight without damaging the body strength.

Ford also uses fiber “REPREVE” made from recycled PET bottles as a seat fabric. According to the company, the use of this recycled material has reduced the number of landfilled PET bottles by more than 5 million in 2015.

Ford also uses reinforced resin harnesses made of rice husks, fuel hoses made from castor bean oil, seat materials made from soybeans or recycled cotton from the tertiary industry, and so on.

In the process of exploring automotive environmental protection methods, Ford explored the extensive use of renewable resources. At present, the company is studying a very common shrub - biloba in Arizona. If the rubber extracted from chrysanthemum can be used, it is expected to reduce the amount of rubber used in the manufacture of automobiles. Moreover, the company is still studying natural rubber alternative plants, including dandelion, sunflower, sugar cane and so on.

In addition, Ford is also considering working with Heinz Group (HJ Heinz) to make use of the tomato skin produced when making ketchup. According to reports, tomato skin can be used to make wiring racks and storage boxes for small changes and small items.
