Xue Dayuan: Before the Ministry of Agriculture had issued a genetically modified safety certificate for cotton, and a genetically modified safety certificate for food, this was still the first one. From the perspective of biotechnology, there is great potential for genetic modification in improving food security. But for now, there is no evidence that transgenes can increase crop yields. Its role is mainly in pest control.

How does this affect our country's foreign trade?

Xue Dayuan: There will be some negative impact on foreign trade. Because many countries, especially European countries, have restrictions on the import of genetically modified foods. Every year, China exports a large amount of processed foods, and EU countries have strict regulations on the composition of these products. Foods such as rice cakes, which may contain genetically modified ingredients themselves, may cause some problems when exported.

For most Chinese, "GM" is still a vague concept. Why?

Xue Dayuan: There are two reasons. The first is that these companies that produce genetically modified products are unwilling to promote their products for some reason. On the other hand, the country also believes that genetic modification is a more sensitive topic. If it is improperly promoted, it may cause Public panic.

In terms of China's own agricultural conditions, is "genetic modification" an inevitable choice?

Xue Dayuan: This is not necessarily. This is also a more intense issue at present. We can now rely on conventional conventional technologies to ensure sufficient food production. As I just mentioned, GM has no direct effect on increasing grain output.

The issue of the safety of genetically modified foods has always been the focus of debate in the international community. What do you think?

Xue Dayuan: It is not yet known whether genetic modification will bring about unknown risks to the ecological environment. Some genes have been used for many years and there is no problem. But this is not a conclusive statement. It requires specific analysis of specific events. On the other hand, it is the impact on human health. The long-term consumption of genetically modified foods will not harm the human body. It is also an issue that is still under observation.
