Japan realizes the use of ammonia to generate electricity

The researchers pointed out that although there are problems such as difficulty in ignition and slow combustion, ammonia is expected to be used as a clean fuel that does not emit carbon dioxide through further improvement.

In the course of the experiment, the researchers first produced a micro gas turbine power plant, replacing approximately 30% of the kerosene as fuel with gaseous ammonia, and then mixed combustion, successfully bringing the output power to 21 kilowatts, and simply using kerosene as fuel. At the same time, the output power is basically the same, and the emitted nitrogen oxides are less than 10ppm (1ppm, ie, 1 part per million), and fully meet the environmental standards.

The researchers said that due to the use of a diffusive combustion method that is difficult to misfire, that is, burning the fuel after injecting the fuel into the cylinder, thereby making it possible to use ammonia to generate electricity, this experiment clearly shows the potential of ammonia as a fuel for power generation.

The main products of ammonia combustion are water and nitrogen. Therefore, as long as some of the traditional fuels such as oil are replaced with ammonia, carbon dioxide emissions can be greatly reduced. In the future, the research team intends to further increase the proportion of ammonia in fuels and strive to bring ammonia power generation into practical use at an early date.
