Sao Paulo, Brazil will increase traffic monitoring by 40%

Recently, a survey indicated that traffic violations in the city of Sao Paulo have become increasingly serious. Compared with the same period of last year, the record of traffic tickets created a new record. In order to improve traffic safety, the city of Sao Paulo decided to start monitoring cameras by 40% from April. The total number will increase from 601 to 843.

Equipment installation starts next month and it is expected that all equipment will be installed within one year. Some of the old equipment will also be replaced by more advanced monitoring equipment. These new equipment are more powerful and are mainly used to monitor overspeeds and encroach on bus lanes and other violations.

There are currently four companies bidding for this project. The installation and purchase of these devices will cost 526.97 million reais, which will cost an average of 10,500 reais per machine. According to data provided by the municipal government, the city’s traffic fines reached 805 million reais last year, and this year is expected to increase to 1.2 billion reais. Specific construction plans and locations have not yet been disclosed, but the main installation sites should be bus lanes and some large roads that have not yet installed monitoring devices.

The equipment installed this time mainly includes four types. The first type is installed on the main roads in the urban areas and is used to monitor speeding and occupy bus lanes. The second type is installed at intersections to monitor violations of traffic lights and disregard sidewalks and other violations. The third type is mainly installed on overpasses and bridges.
