The Shenyang National Research Center for Materials Science, Institute of Metal Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences, worked with the research team of the Department of Materials, University of Cambridge, UK, to achieve work hardening in bulk amorphous materials for the first time. Related results were published in "Nature" on February 26. Work hardening or deformation hardening, that is, the behavior of a metal material to increase its strength with plastic deformation, reflects the ability of the material to resist further deformation in uniform plastic deformation. It is the most important phenomenon of the mechanical behavior of engineering materials and an important basis for the widespread use of metals as structural materials. Amorphous alloys (also known as metallic glasses) have many excellent mechanical properties (high yield stress, high toughness, and record-breaking "damage tolerance"), but strain softening is their fatal weakness. Unlike traditional crystalline materials, their deformations are highly localized, manifested as non-uniform deformations dominated by shear bands. This directly leads to its brittleness at room temperature, which becomes the bottleneck of amorphous alloys. Therefore, achieving the work hardening behavior of bulk amorphous alloys is considered to be a core scientific issue in amorphous alloys and even all amorphous materials. "Our research found that the work hardening of bulk amorphous alloys is accompanied by the annihilation and reduction of material defects, the process of transition from high energy state to low energy state." Li Yi, the corresponding author of the paper and a researcher at the Institute of Metals, Chinese Academy of Sciences, said, The traditional work hardening process of the material is completely opposite, indicating that amorphous alloys have a completely different work hardening mechanism. " The above research subverts people's inherent understanding of the deformation softening behavior of amorphous materials, and provides new ideas and directions for the development of amorphous alloys with uniform plastic deformation capabilities and their industrial applications.
